Brazilian cinema will be the principal guest of honor at the 65th Cannes Film Festival held in France between May 16 and May 27. The decision was announced by the festival director responsible for programming the movies at the event, Thierry Frémaux. The filmmaker Nelson Pereira dos Santos, aged 84, will receive a tribute during the festival.
The film “Music According to Tom Jobim” (A Música segundo Tom Jobim) by Nelson Pereira dos Santos, will be screened in a special session. "Santos' film is a tribute to Jobim, the creator of Bossa Nova" said Frémaux, referring to the work that recounts the story of Antonio Carlos Jobim and his creative methods through the composer's music and thoughts.
Frémaux also cited Brazilian directors such as Cacá Diegues, who represents the so-called ‘New Cinema’ with classic films such as Xica da Silva and Quilombo, as well as Ruy Guerra, who directed Ópera do Malandro and Os Deuses e os Mortos, among others.
Highlights of Brazil at Cannes will be the new feature film by Walter Salles, On the Road, and two films of Glauber Rocha shot in the 1960s: Terra em Transe and O Dragão da Maldade Contra o Santo Guerreiro. The last two categories won the Critics Award and Best Director, respectively, in 1967 and 1968.
