Maracanã soccer stadium will be supplied with solar energy in 2014. On Friday, May 11, an agreement was announced for use of the technology involving the companies Yingli, Light ESCO, EDF Consultoria and the State government of Rio de Janeiro. The stadium will have more than 1,500 photovoltaic modules installed in a metal ring that will surround the top of the stadium. The positioning of the panels will provide a visual reminder of the importance of the environment during the tournament.
"Brazil has an emerging market that is important for Yingli. We will continue expanding our presence here as solar energy use in the country continues to grow", said Liangsheng Miao, President and CEO of Yingli Green Energy. "We hope that this flagship project will provide an incentive for other Brazilian stadiums to install photovoltaic systems to increase the production and use of renewable energy across the country", said Federico Addiechi, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at FIFA.
