The Financing Program for Studies & Projects (Finep), a development agency linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, is formatting a new program aimed at supporting projects of sustainable technologies, which will be launched during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, next June. Resources around R$ 3 billion will come from the Investment Support Program (PSI), informed the President of Finep, Glauco Arbix, during his attendance to the 24th National Forum at the headquarters of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES).
According to Arbix, the idea is to gather credit and subsidy in the same program. "We're going to add, within two or three months, a third element, which is the investment," he added. He also explains that investments in research and development have increased about 23% per year, in various bodies and organizations of Brazil. "That clearly shows that the country is investing a lot in science, technology and innovation, in a more diverse manner".
Finep has increased by approximately 50% its budget on innovation and on developing technologies in the past year, bringing the amount to R$ 6 billion. At the same time, they have reduced the timeframe for analysis of projects in 70%, from 214 days to 102 days. For this year, Arbix revealed that the body’s request "is the horizon with which we are working, R$ 6 billion more." The forecast is, in the future, to increase by five times what Finep invests in innovation projects.
