Brazilian government partners with UN-Habitat

21/05/2012 06:20 - Portal Brasil

The Minister for the Environment, Izabella Teixeira, signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement with representatives from the Ministry of Cities and the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat) on Thursday (May 17). The Federal Government will now work towards constructing an international agenda for sustainable urban development.

The agreement will have a term of one year and provides for studies, publications and meetings to discuss and develop recommendations in the areas of environmental clean-up, large-scale housing and urban mobility. The first products will be presented at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), scheduled for June 13 to 22 in Rio de Janeiro.

UN-HABITAT aims to encourage the promotion of sustainable cities in social, economic and environmental terms. For Minister Izabella Teixeira, the cooperation agreement is expected to generate innovative results. "Housing has to be discussed in different ways", she said. "Brazil brings together the principal conditions that will permit innovative and bold proposals to be made".
