Brazil creates a disaster management center in the Amazon

22/05/2012 17:43 - Portal Brasil

The Brazilian Ministry of Integration has established the National Center for Risk and Disaster Management in the Amazon (Cenad). The purpose is to mitigate losses caused by natural events such as excessive rainfall. The committee will be formed by technicians from the National Civil Defense and the Ministries of Health, Agrarian Development, Defense, Social Development and Hunger Combat, as well as other institutions linked to the Amazon Civil Defense.

The creation of a local committee to continue with actions to cope with floods in the State was the subject of a video conference between President Rousseff and the Governor of Amazonas, Omar Aziz, around ten days ago. A total of R$ 17.5 million has been transferred to the State by the Federal Government to date. The funds are being used in relief efforts for those affected, in addition to the purchase of cleaning and hygiene products, medicine and food.
