The Minister for the Environment,Izabella Teixeira, said the discussions related to the document that shall be signed by Chiefs of State at the end of the United Nations Conference for Sustainable Development, Rio+20, “have made real progress in relation to the point they were when we started”. Those discussions took place during the third round of negotiations at the UN Headquarters, in New York, which ended on the weekend of June 2 and 3.
According to Izabella Teixeira, the reduction of the text and the definition of concrete proposals that will simply need some “fine tuning” are among the advances.“There are still points that have to be discussed in order to attain to convergence but, for the Brazilian Government, the advances are important because the text has even gotten smaller, several brackets have been removed. Now we have to look for a consensus around the theses, either one or the other. We no longer have the fight between ‘I agree with this, I disagree with that’”, she explained. The minister added that the convergence will be sought after, as of June 13, when the preparatory committee starts working in Rio de Janeiro.
