Brazil Insights Series: Agriculture and Livestock
Brazil is an international power in agriculture and livestock. The combination of excellent weather, vast arable areas and robust investment in research led Brazil to increase its grain and livestock production by 774% and 251% respectively between 1960 and 2010. Heavy investments have made the country an international benchmark in research for the sector, with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - EMBRAPA) leading the National Agricultural Research System. Together, these factors have ensured Brazil a leading role in international cooperation with Africa and Latin America as well as partnerships with the United States, Europe and Asia. All this investment is founded on sound principles of sustainability, with a focus on increasing Brazilian production and reducing environmental impacts.
