CURITIBA
Three projects were commissioned at the Afonso Pena International Airport, one of which – restoration of the landing and take-off strips – has been completed, in June 2012.
It is worth emphasizing that at the moment the capacity of Curitiba Airport is 8.5 million passengers a year. Since the projected demand for 2014 is for 7.9 million passengers, Curitiba Airport will be prepared to meet the demand expected for the World Cup.
Expansion of the passenger terminal and road system:
At an estimated cost of R$ 239.14 million, the construction will expand the airport area from 46,000 square meters to 64,800 square meters, in addition to modernization of the airport facilities.
The complete work at Afonso Pena Airport is programmed to end in 2016, when the airport’s capacity will reach 14.8 million passengers per year.
Expansion of the aircraft apron area:
At an estimated cost of R$ 27.21 million, this project will expand the area of the aircraft apron area from 84,000 square meters to 143,900 square meters, as well as increase the space available for aircraft to park.
Restoration of the landing strip:
Concluded in June 2012 at an estimated cost of R$ 19.06 million, this project completely restored the landing and take-off strip, which measures 2,215 meters.
FORTALEZA
Renovation and expansion of the passenger terminal, the aircraft apron area and adaptation of the road system:
The contract for this work was rescinded (as published on 27 May) in the Official Gazette of the Union). Infraero is already taking steps to resume the construction projects.
Prior to the rescission, an expansion of 4,600 thousand square meters was completed in the ramp equipment area, as well as construction of a new domestic boarding lounge totaling 1,350 square meters. In addition, the aircraft apron area was increased from 134,700 thousand square meters to 163,200 square meters. This expansion enables Fortaleza Airport to receive at the same time three more 737-800-type airplanes, one more 767-300-type and one more of the 777-200 type.
2) Temporary Remote Terminal:
Infraero opted to install a temporary remote terminal because of the poor rates of execution of the work on the passenger terminal. This led to the start of the TRT operation on 23 May, the objective being to expand the airport’s capacity to meet the demand expected for the World Cup;
With investments of R$ 1.79 million, the terminal serves as a remote boarding point, with 1,200 square meters, capacity for 400,000 passengers, air-conditioning, four boarding gates, toilets (including for those with special needs), a cafeteria, seats and flight information screens.
This solution has already been used for other sports events (the 2012 Olympics, the 2010 World Cup and the 2004 Eurocopa) to attend to the special demand of the events.
These undertakings enable Infraero to increase its capacity to 6.9 million passengers/year to attend to the expected demand. Since the expected demand for 2014 is for 6.8 million passengers, Fortaleza Airport is prepared to meet the demand projected for the World Cup.
RIO DE JANEIRO – GALEÃO
Three projects were planned for the Rio de Janeiro International Airport (Galeão):
Refurbishment of Passenger Terminal 1:
Budgeted at R$ 198.36 million, this project aims to revitalize Terminal 1 of the Galeão Airport.
In May, Infraero delivered the new domestic arrivals section in Sector A of Terminal 1 of the Galeão Airport. The location was completely refurbished and has at present a large area for circulation and four new escalators. In early March, Infraero reopened the public arrivals (disembarkation) area, which was being refurbished, and delivered luggage conveyors with new systems.
Refurbishment of sectors B and C will be reassessed jointly with the new concessionaire of the Galeão Airport. This will not affect operations during the World Cup.
Refurbishment and expansion of Passenger Terminal 2: investment in this project is R$ 156.39 million.
In May, Infraero delivered the new international arrivals area of Terminal 2. In this area, four new conveyors with new luggage transporting systems were put in operation, which will double its retrieval capacity to passengers. In addition, the new structure has restrooms, drinking fountains and monitors to provide flight information.
The new departures area of Terminal 2 was completed in January. The area, comprised of 11,109 square meters, has a new entry to the international departures area, in addition to two new check-in islands with 32 counters, equipped with a new luggage conveyor system with automatic luggage addressing system and the inspection of 100 percent of the materials through five security levels. The new departure area has also six X-ray machines for hand luggage, in addition to an X-ray system exclusive for products bought at the duty free shop and another one for special luggage. With regards to passport control, 16 new federal police booths were installed. An additional improvement is the revitalization of the restrooms of Terminal 2.
Currently, the Galeão has capacity to serve 17.4 million passengers/year. The demand expected for 2014 is 18.9 million passengers/year. With the conclusion of the projects at Terminal 2 (which has already finished and delivered some stages), the Galeão will be able to receive 30.4 million passengers per year. That is to say: Galeão is ready to meet the demand expected during the World Cup.
Recovery and revitalization of aircraft runways and yards/concourses:
Budgeted in R$ 85.10 million, this project was concluded in March 2014 and is awaiting approval by the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac).

Refurbishment, modernization and expansion of passenger terminal and harmonization with the road system:
Budgeted at R$ 444.46 million, the projects at the Manaus International Airport were delivered in stages, and in January they were ready for use:
New remote international departure and arrival rooms (with the assistance of the departure bridge);
Part of the new areas in the lobby, with departure and arrival areas; and part of international arrivals area, including Customs and immigration areas;
Part of the parking area at arrivals, with 400 parking spaces, which complement the 685 existing spaces in the departure area, delivered in October 2013;
The Manaus Airport can receive 13.5 million departures and arrivals; the demand expected for 2014 is 4 million passengers/year.
PORTO ALEGRE

Three new projects had been commissioned for the Salvador International Airport and one of them – the expansion of the aircraft courtyard – has already been completed.
1) Refurbishment and adaptation of the passenger terminal:
Budgeted at R$ 93.53 million, the project does not aim to expand the capacity of the terminal, but to enhance the comfort of passengers and other users of the facilities. At present, the airport has capacity for 13 million passengers departing and arriving. This capacity serves the demand expected for 2014, as 10.8 million passengers are expected.
The first stage in the new Salvador International Airport check-in area was delivered in February. The space has 36 counters for the airline companies, which are added to the 28 currently existing ones, totaling 64 positions.
Also, in the ground-floor area, the remote domestic check-out/departure area was expanded (from 218.04 square meters to 573.41 square meters) and delivered, as well as an expansion in the restroom area; the restrooms in the international arrivals lobby; the group of elevators, escalators and stairwell (connection of the ground-floor and the 1st floor); refurbishment of the elevator at the international arrivals area; conveyors in the luggage area ( 1st stage of the project); conveyors for luggage retrieval in “U” at the domestic arrivals lounge. Updates on the first floor included: restrooms in the food and beverages area; airline company counters; the first stage of the refurbishment and expansion of the domestic departure ramp.
2) Expansion of the aircrafts courtyard:
