Rio de Janeiro (1 July 2014) - The Rio de Janeiro Open Media Centre (OMC) will host a guided press tour of the Amazonas offshore patrol vessel of the Brazilian Navy on Monday, 7 July 2014 at 6:00 am. Media guests will board the ship at Guanabara Bay, and have the opportunity to watch a simulation of an approach to a suspect vessel. Spokespersons from the Brazilian Navy will then detail the patrolling operations that were intensified throughout the country during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Launched in 2009, the Amazonas stands out for its capacity to remain deployed off the coast for long periods of time. In addition to regular inspection, search and rescue operations, it can also be used in humanitarian aid campaigns and hold small to medium aircraft.

The vessel was built in the United Kingdom. It has three cannons as its main armament, complemented by removable machine guns, mounting points for rifles and flare launchers. In normal operating conditions, the Amazonas’ weapons are controlled and operated from the Combat Operations Center (CIC) using the Brazilian Navy's Command and Control System (OSIRIS).

To join the tour, please send an email to presstrip.cam@cdn.com.br with your full name, media outlet, country of origin, contact phone in Rio de Janeiro and the number of your Brazilian ID (RG) or passport (as applicable).
