The National Institute of Space Research (INPE), held yesterday the project launch of theREED-PAC (Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation), an international partnership with IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, Austria), COMIFAC (Central Africa Forests Commission), UNEP-WCMC (United Nations Environment Program -World Conservation Monitoring Centre) and IPEA (Institute of Applied Economic Research).
The project, which has the support from the International Office of the Global Land Project (GLP), headquartered at INPE, was launched during the workshop performed this week.
The REDD-PAC aims at the development of technical know-how and ability in designing efficient, effective and environmentally relevantREED+ strategies (see below). In addition, the project will serve as a global forum to share and improve global data on forests and deforestation forcing, and develop reference methodologies for the modeling of REDD +, as well as regional planning.
The project will benefit from the existing experience in partner organizations. The IIASA will contribute with its global modeling capacity. INPE and COMIFAC will contribute providing high-resolution data on Brazil and Congo Basin countries, respectively. INPE will also contribute with additional space results from its high-resolution models of deforestation. The WCMC will offer their experience in the area of biodiversity indicators.
